When I was in Cancun last month, our resort had an in-room fridge stocked with Coke, beer, water, etc.  One day I reached in and grabbed a Coke. I popped the lid.  That's odd. I smell beer somewhere near.  Then I drank the Coke, except it was of course really Tecate beer in a red can, just like the Coke I meant to grab.  Blecch.

I know, you say if I drank good beer I'd like it.  I don't believe you.  I don't want to believe you.  Beer is gross.

To be fair, isn't any drink gross when you're expecting something else? Every time I do it I think I get defamiliarized with the whole world of taste.

But I do think beer's gross.

In my experience, the key to appreciating alcohol is to sample the best of breed and work backwards.  Take a quintessential brew (say, a quality Belgian), sip it, discern the flavors you enjoy, and try to locate them in lesser offerings.

The taste of alcohol, in and of itself, is off-putting to anyone expecting to experience beverages in the way Americans experience them.  We drink with a wide palate, with an eye toward consumption rather than taste.  Carbonated sodas have primed the well in this regard, on account of their high acidity.

Viz. the "working backwards" model, Tecate is an endeavor to recreate the "soda pop" experience.  It isn't an interesting or compelling beer, but is certainly drinkable for anyone who enjoys beer generally.

I second the ew.  I wouldn't mind trying a better beer than the crap I've swallowed, but I don't know where to start and I'm finding it hard to care enough to find out.

Really. I wonder if you had a good beer if it would be so gross. Something like a nice nutty brown ale or a chocolate stout or something.

Man, I'm making myself thirsty now.

Seeing people who obviously don't understand beer makes me sad.  Cry  I try to save as many as I can, but sadly not everyone will understand.

I'm having lots of fun being a teetotaltroll in this forum. Since I can't imbibe (legalistic church covenant) it makes me feel better to bug the cool guys. And the drunks, them too.  Grin

I just graduated from a school that has a covenant like that, today actually (didn't quite keep me from doing what I want in my own home though), and have celebrated my new found freedom gladly.  I hope you'll one day get to do the same.

I drink it when I am at Wrigley Field, but that is the only time I will. Old Style gives beer a bad name.
